Listing a Weekend          Home Page

If you sponsor a folk dance weekend, we invite you to list it in Folk Dance Directory using the form below. As long as your event has classes, workshops or parties which make use of ballroom, Balkan, Cajun, clog, contra, English country, international, Israeli, Morris, Scottish country, square, step, swing, vintage, western square or any other type of traditional or ethnic folk dance, we welcome your participation.

If you'd like to suggest a folk dance weekend for which you're NOT the sponsor, please DON'T use the form on this page. Instead, go to our Suggesting an Event page and use the form there to tell us about the event. We'll then contact the event's sponsor with an invitation to visit this page and submit a listing.

Why Should You List Your Weekend?     Top Of Page

The Internet is a truly remarkable invention. Where else can you make your folk dance activities known to millions of people for just pennies a day? Compare this to the cost of placing an ad which reaches a few thousand people for a month or distributing several thousand flyers.

The key to success on the Internet is getting your activities listed on web sites seen by lots of people. Since there are millions of web sites, most people use search engines such as 1Blink, 37.com, Alexa, AllTheWeb, AltaVista, AOL, Ask Jeeves, Dmoz, Dogpile, EuroSeek, Excite, Go, Google, Hotbot, Infonetware, Ixquick, Looksmart, Lycos, Mamma, MetaCrawler, MetaEureka, MetaGopher, MSN, NBCi, Netscape, Overture, ProFusion, Search, SurfWax, Teoma, Thunderstone, Vivisimo, WebCrawler, Widow, WiseNut and Yahoo, much like telephone directories, to find what they're after. Unfortunately, most searches produce endless lists of hundreds, if not thousands of web sites. So, for a web site to be visible, it must appear on lots of search engines and be on the first page of search results.

We've worked very hard to be among the first few results whenever one searches for folk dance, folk dancing, folk dance special events, folk dance classes, folk dance groups, folk dance articles or some other such term. We're very happy to report our overwhelming success in winning the first, second or third place on almost every search engine and meta-search engine out there. As a result, your special event listing with Folk Dance Directory will be seen by many tens of thousands of people, including those who dance now and those who might like to give it a try for the first time. Why is this so important? Because, for folk dancing to survive and prosper, we must not only retain current folk dancers but also attract newcomers. And there's no better, less expensive way to reach non-folkdancers than with the Internet.

With this much exposure, the question is not "Why should you list your events?" Rather, you should ask: "Can I afford not to list them?"

How Much Does It Cost?     Top Of Page

We charge a one-time fee to list a weekend according to the table below. If you submit listings for more than one event, add the listing fees due for EACH event to compute the total due for all the listings

Listing Fee For Each Weekend
If The Event Starts On . . . The Fee For Each Listing Is . . .
Jan 1, 1999 - Dec 31, 2002 Free
Jan 1, 2003 - Dec 31, 2003 $15.00 per event
Jan 1, 2004 - Dec 31, 2004 $20.00 per event
Jan 1, 2005 - Dec 31, 2005 $25.00 per event
Jan 1, 2006 - Dec 31, 2006 $30.00 per event
Jan 1, 2007 - Dec 31, 2007 $35.00 per event
Jan 1, 2008 or later $40.00 per event

Events are published in Folk Dance Directory a couple of days after we receive all listing information and fees. So, the sooner you send everything in, the sooner your listing will appear and the longer news of your event will remain on public view. For example, if on Jan 6, 2002 we receive your information and $25.00 listing fee for an event to begin on July 8, 2005, your listing would appear on our Folk Dance Weekends page by Jan 13, 2002 and remain on public view for a full 3½ years (42 months) at a cost of about 60¢ per month. If you consider how many ads and flyers you could buy for 60¢ a month, you'd begin to realize how much impact your listings would have in Folk Dance Directory. Please remember, our web site is visited by well over 70,000 folk dancers each year.

Please send full payment of listing fees to Folk Dance Association, P.O. Box 300500, Brooklyn, NY 11230-0500. Checks or money orders in U. S. funds should be made payable to Folk Dance Association. We must receive all fees due before listings can be added to Folk Dance Directory.

What's Included in Your Listing?     Top Of Page

If you've visited our Folk Dance Weekends page, you've probably noticed all listings follow a common format. We always begin with the dates and name of the event. If the event has a web site, it's linked to the event's name. We then list what types of folk dance are done at the event and where it'll be held. Finally, we include up to three contact people and provide direct links to their e-mail addresses (if available). As you can easily see, these are the facts you're most likely to know a long time before the event. Should you need to change the event's date or location, no problem! Simply e-mail the corrections to list_weekend@folkdancing.org and we'll correct your listing within a few days.

If you want to say more about the event, you'll need to visit our Advertising page and submit the form you'll find there requesting advertising information.

Obviously, those with web sites and e-mail addresses have a big advantage since potential patrons can instantly get more details and ask questions with just a few mouse clicks. The following sections tell you how to obtain a web site and e-mail account totally free and without obligation.

You Don't Have a Web Site?     Top Of Page

It's amazing so many sponsors of folk dance special events don't have web sites to give their potential patrons instant access to the latest news about upcoming events.

If you don't have a web site, why not? If you believe it's too hard to create one, think again because it's much easier than you think. In fact, creating one is no more difficult than composing a letter on a computer. If you think it's too expensive to maintain one, there are many companies ready to give you a web site absolutely free with no setup or maintenance charges. Some of these companies  are  FortuneCity, FreeYellow, GeoCities and Homestead. (In the case of FreeYellow, you can even use your free web site for commercial and profit-making activities.) For a large list of companies offering free and low cost web hosting, visit CNET Internet Services. You might also want to check out NetIdentity's interesting web hosting service.

You Don't Have an E-mail Address?     Top Of Page

Since sponsors of folk dance special events always hope to achieve full attendance, it's surprising so many still don't have e-mail addresses. When most people see something interesting, they'd like their questions answered right away. They don't want to be bothered looking for paper and postage, composing and mailing a letter and waiting several days for a reply. By avoiding all this extra time, trouble and expense, e-mail helps make potential patrons more likely to consider attending.

If you don't have an e-mail address, why not? Perhaps you think it's too confusing. Actually, it's just as easy as regular mail except it doesn't require postage, can be posted in the middle of a raging blizzard or typhoon without your getting wet (or dressed) and reaches the recipient a few minutes after it's mailed. Maybe you feel it's too expensive. No problem; there are more than 1,000 companies which offer free e-mail accounts. In fact, there's even one company that offers free e-mail to people who own computers but don't have Internet access.

First, you need to know that e-mail accounts can be web-based or POP. Web-based e-mail allows you to retrieve messages from any computer in the world -- yours, a friend's, your employer's or even one you can use free of charge at a public library or a school. With POP e-mail, you can retrieve messages only from your own computer using an e-mail reader such as Eudora, Netscape or Outlook Express.

Some companies offering free web-based e-mail accounts are: Daily Web Planner Email, Excite, Hotmail, Joymail, Juno, USA.NET and Yahoo. A company offering free POP e-mail accounts is:  GeoCities. For a list of over 1,000 companies offering free e-mail accounts and a discussion of the different types of e-mail accounts, visit Free Email Address Directory. You might also want to check out NetIdentity's interesting e-mail accounts. Finally. we understand Juno offers free e-mail accounts to computer users without Internet access.

Internet Access Is Too Expensive?     Top Of Page

If you think Internet access isn't worth $20.00 a month, you'll be happy to know many providers agree with you. If you visit CPM, you'll find a list of over 5,000 Internet Service Providers with complete fee and service details. This list can help you find providers charging $12.00 or less per month to put you on-line.

How Do You Submit Your Listing?     Top Of Page

To list a folk dance weekend, please fill out the following form and click the SUBMIT button after you're finished.  A Form Confirmation screen should appear within 30 seconds to indicate the form's successful transmission. (It may take longer if your system is slow or the Internet is having a bad hair day.) If it doesn't appear or if you have any other problem with this form, please e-mail the requested information to list_weekend@folkdancing.org or give us a call at (888) 321-1023.

This form is designed for JUST ONE EVENT. So, to list several weekends, you'll need to submit several forms, one for each. Fortunately, there's a very simple way to do this. After you submit the first event and see the Form Confirmation screen several seconds later, use the back button on your browser to go back to the form you filled out. Everything you typed for the first event will still be on the form. Simply change those lines which are different for the second event and then resubmit the form. Several seconds later, you'll see another Form Confirmation form for the second event. Repeat this process for each additional event you wish to submit until you've submitted all your events.

Remember, submitting the form is only half the process. We must also receive all listing fees due and you must check your published listings for completeness and accuracy. So, please send full payment of all fees due for your listings to: Folk Dance Association, P.O. Box 300500, Brooklyn, NY 11230-0500. Make your check or money order payable to Folk Dance Association.

A week or two after you've sent payment, check each of your listings for typos, errors and omissions. If you find any, click on the Corrected Listing button on the form below, submit it with the corrections and we'll fix your listing. Naturally, there'll be no charge for the corrections.

If something about your event has changed and you need to revise a listing, click on the Revised Listing button on the following form, submit it with your revisions and we'll make the changes free of charge.

If just a few items need correction or revision, you can save time and effort by printing out the listings in need of alteration, entering the changes by hand and mailing them to Folk Dance Association, P.O. Box 300500, Brooklyn, NY 11230-0500.

The Accuracy Of A Listing     Top Of Page

If we're certain of a listing's source, we used a phrase like Mar 28, 1999 or like Feb 15, 2001 at the listing's end to indicate the fact. The phrase Mar 28, 1999 indicates someone associated with the event on March 29, 1999 sent us all the facts we used in the listing on a Listing a Weekend form from our Listing a Weekend page. The phrase Feb 15, 2001 indicates someone associated with the event on February 15, 2001 spoke with us and verbally presented all the facts we included in the listing. In addition, we were assured we'd be promptly informed about all future changes in the listing and pledged to publish all corrections on the internet promptly. If neither phrase appears in a listing, then we've no idea of the listing's source.
